Can the Republican Party splinter?

It appears that the radical, ultra right wing nut jobs are defecting to the Tea Party. The best we can hope for is that the Tea Party becomes a valid party with significant mass, largely made up of former Republicans. That would successfully split Republican voters, and leave the field wide open for both Republicans and nut job Tea Partiers to be minority players in American politics. There's always hope.
